I was born in 1969 in North Rhine-Westphalia, near Cologne/Bonn. At the age of three, a couple adopted me and from then on I was my parents. I grew up in a traditional working-class family, in other words in modest circumstances.
As is usual in simple social circumstances, my education began at secondary school. However, everything inside me urged me to do more and so I was the only one in my large family environment to gain an academic education. I studied political science, sociology and philosophy in Bonn and gained my doctorate in 2004, specialising in foreign affairs, foreign trade, security and geopolitics as well as international and constitutional law.
My dissertation dealt with the Yugoslavia war coverage of the Times and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
Meinen beruflichen Werdegang starte ich im Bereich der Lehrtätigkeit (politische Bildung) zum Beispiel als Öffentlichkeitsreferent für das Verfassungsorgan Deutscher Bundestag und zu EU-Themen im Gustav-Stresemann-Institut in Bonn. Die politische Bildung begleitet mich – mit Brüchen – bis heute.
Meine politische Laufbahn begann einige Jahre später ab 2000 mit dem Auftrag als Director of Field Office, Election Officer und Antifraud Officer der UNMIK/OSZE in Kosovo/Bundesrepublik Jugoslawien.
Nach meinem Ausscheiden aus der Mission, nahm ich 2005 einen Lehrauftrag an der Humboldt-Universität Berlin an.
My work as a public relations officer for the constitutional body of the German Bundestag from 1999 marked the next phase of my political involvement. In 2006, I took over the position of security policy advisor for the Left Party parliamentary group in the Bundestag and finally became a member of the Bundestag in 2013.
Serving the general public at a political level and in political education was and is far more than just a job for me. It is my vocation. With over 25 years of practical political experience through OSCE missions abroad in the former Yugoslavia and as a speaker and finally as a member of the German Bundestag, I lived my calling.
Von 2013 bis 2021 war ich Mitglied der Bundestagsfraktion der Linken und deren Obmann im Verteidigungsausschuss und stellvertretend im Auswärtigen Ausschuss sowie Mitglied der Parlamentarischen Versammlung der NATO. Zuvor war ich acht Jahre Referent für Sicherheitspolitik der Fraktion DIE LINKE.
I was initially involved in the Alliance 90/The Greens party. After leaving in 2005, I became a member of the PDS, which became the Left Party in 2007. From 2006 to 2013, I was a security policy advisor for the Left Party parliamentary group in the German Bundestag.
Am 22. September 2013 trat ich bei der Bundestagswahl als Direktkandidat der Linken im Wahlkreis Rhein-Sieg-Kreis I an. Dabei erreichte ich als viertbester Kandidat im Wahlkreis ein sehr gutes Ergebnis. Bei der Wahl zog ich über die Landesliste in den Deutschen Bundestag ein. Im 18. und im 19. Deutschen Bundestag war ich Obmann im Verteidigungsausschuss des Deutschen Bundestages und von 2013 bis 2021 stellvertretendes Mitglied im Auswärtigen Ausschuss.
After I made it onto the list in 2017, my 8th place on the list was not enough for me to be re-elected in the 2021 federal elections. I left the Die Linke party in November 2023.
I have learnt a lot during my time in politics and some illusions have been shattered. As a result, I now see some things, political claims and demands with different eyes.
Eine Weiterentwicklung erlebe ich als Politischer Berater oder Political Advisor für nachhaltige Projekte. So kann ich in der Wirtschaft sowohl meine Expertise als auch meine Reputation als geradliniger, authentischer und konsequenter Politiker in beratender Funktion gewinnbringend einsetzen. Meine Konferenzbeiträge in wirtschafts- und wirtschaftspolitischem Umfeld zu Themen wie Energieversorgung in einer sich wandelnden Welt, Standortfaktoren (Sicherheit) in Europa und Lobbyismus im deutschen Parlamentarismus sollen Unternehmungen eine Orientierung geben.
Since leaving the Left Party, I have been working as a lecturer again. I have also discovered a new role in business and accepted an offer as a political consultant or political advisor for sustainable projects. I am also intensifying my work as a publicist.
In 2024, I was invited to the founding day of BSW.
I look forward to the future with excitement.
Writing has been with me for a very long time.
I am particularly fond of political science texts relating to foreign and security policy. Geopolitics is the focus here.

Meine Dissertation kam zu dem Ergebnis, dass sich die Berichterstattungen der Times und der FAZ nur geringfügig unterscheiden. Beide Zeitungen würden Staaten als zentrale Akteure des internationalen Geschehens darstellen, und Konflikte würden vor allem auf ethnozentrische Differenzen zurückführen.
